In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes an in-depth look at Arrow Video’s brand-new 4K UHD release of The Last Boy Scout, the explosive 1991 action thriller starring Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans, directed by Tony Scott and written by Shane Black. Released during the golden age of the R-rated action movie, The Last Boy Scout pairs Willis as burned-out private investigator Joe Hallenbeck with Wayans as disgraced former professional football player Jimmy Dix. What begins with a seemingly routine protection job quickly spirals into murder, corruption, professional football, gambling and a conspiracy that puts both men directly in the line of fire. And along the way, plenty of things explode. Gary revisits The Last Boy Scout more than three decades after its original release to see how this unapologetically violent, profane and darkly funny action movie holds up today. How well does the chemistry between Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans work? Does Shane Black’s rapid-fire dialogue still land? How much of Tony Scott’s unmistakable visual style can already be seen here? And where does the film rank among the great action movies of the early 1990s? Then it’s time to dig into Arrow Video’s new 4K Ultra HD release. Gary examines the 4K presentation, HDR, picture quality, audio, special features, packaging and collectible contents to determine whether Arrow has delivered the definitive physical media edition of this cult action favorite. For longtime fans who already own The Last Boy Scout on previous formats, does the new 4K offer enough of an upgrade to justify buying it again? And for collectors discovering the movie for the first time, is this the edition to own? Most importantly, does Arrow Video’s The Last Boy Scout 4K deserve a spot in your physical media collection?
